SUBJECT:

Vote NO on Gun Control Proposals - City File # 21-1579

EMAIL BODY:

Mayor, Councilmembers, City Manager, and Staff,

I have read the proposed gun control ordinances detailed in the 6/16/2021 Rules Committee Memorandum authored by Mayor Liccardo, Vice Mayor Jones, Councilmember Carrasco, Councilmember Peralez, and Councilmember Cohen, and I ask you to only approve items:

  • 2.a: “Better inform residents in multiple languages about accessing GVROs;”

  • 7: “Looking out for One Another;” and

  • 9: “Leveraging Federal Information for Early Intervention.”

I urge you to vote NO on all other items in the memorandum.

These remaining proposals will not stop gun violence in San Jose and are mostly unconstitutional or duplicates of existing state laws.  Legal owners of firearms will be unduly punished because, by definition, they are the only people that will be impacted by these proposals. Taxing and isolating a group of people purely based on their decision to embrace an enumerated constitutional right is discriminatory and un-American.

Please focus your resources and efforts on addressing the criminals who commit violence in our city and adopting the following policies which can be found in detail at https://SVPAF.org/gunsolutionssj :

  1. Inclusive and Diverse Community Outreach

  2. Stopping Elected Officials Who Propose and/or Vote for Laws Which Increase Violence and Place our Safety in Danger

    1. Repealing Propositions 47, 57, AB109 and stopping AB1509

  3. Supporting Evidence Based Practices to Stop Gun Violence

  4. Enforcing and Prosecuting Existing Gun Laws

  5. Building Mental Health Hospitals and Funding Sobriety Programs

  6. Concealed Carry Weapon Permits Should Be Granted

City Clerk: please include my correspondence in the Public Record the next time any of the items in the memorandum are discussed in the Rules and Open Government Joint Committee and in the City Council.

Respectfully,

Your Constituent
